Neutral Milk Hotel & Girl Guitar Showcase

Wednesday night marked week four of my adventures with Girl Guitar Austin's beginner class.  Now the scary part starts: choosing a song and practicing for the February Girl Guitar showcase - which I'll be in!

I already knew going in to the class what song I want to do: In the Aeroplane Over the Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel.  Not expecting Mandy (or most people... but then again, I'm way behind the rest of the world and should probably give everyone else more credit for being hipper than I) to know the song, I had anticipated having to send her links and YouTube videos, etc, so she can help me learn it.  But when I told her, she got really excited and said she loves that song.  And then she asked me if I had the album On Avery Island, which I don't, so she gave me a copy.  How awesome is that!?

Just in case you don't know the song, (and the other two ladies in class didn't), you have to hear it.  And I'm choosing the Anne Frank tribute video because the album is "a concept album about Anne Frank," which is a really beautiful idea unto itself - Indie rock honoring history.

When I try to learn songs, I watch how other people have done the song acoustically to try and get my strumming right.  In the process of looking at covers for this song, I fell in love.  Twice.

Love #1:

Love #2:

Hopefully I can figure out how to sing this without straining to go deeper than God and my vocal chords intended, but you'll have to see for yourself how it turns out - in February!

Until then, I highly recommend checking out the next upcoming Girl Guitar Showcase - it's going to be on Monday, doors at 7pm, at Antone's, and there will also be some local artists, jewelry makers, etc, there to make it extra girly and fun.  I actually get off work early enough to go that night - yay final exams!  (Just don't tell my kids I said that).

I like the first cover better than the second.

I remember buying that album when I was in high school. I got it cause it had a cool cover. I didn't know anything about the band at the time. I hated it until about 7 years later when I was going through a bunch of old cd cases. That album is in my top five albums of all time now. Keep practicing.
